Typically, you get bad results with the sugar because you did not really make a saturated solution. You can pack a lot of sugar into hot water. You could also try to wet the thread and roll it in sugar so that there are small sugar crystals on the string. They will make “seed crystals,” which will encourage more crystals to form.
